To redshirt or not? Coaches weigh in

When Matt Storniolo arrived at Penn State in 2002 as an 18-year-old freshman he had aspirations of making an immediate impact in the Nittany Lion lineup in his first year in Happy Valley.

It didn’t happen.

Storniolo battled teammate Scott Moore for the starting spot at 141 pounds. The two wrestled off, with Storniolo winning the first match, and Moore coming back to win the second. A third and deciding match happened in the finals of the East Stroudsburg Open, with Moore winning narrowly, 3-1.

“My goal was to compete that year at 141 pounds, redshirt the following year, and then go up to 149 pounds,” said Storniolo. “But there was an All-American in the way. I didn’t find my way into the lineup. I definitely improved a ton that redshirt year.”
