Transitioning from high school wrestling to college wrestling
During the first few months of Matt Azevedo’s college wrestling career, takedowns were hard to come by in the wrestling room.
Azevedo started his college wrestling career at Arizona State (he would later transfer to Iowa State) and in his first year in Tempe he often found himself paired with Shawn Ford, an upperclassman who was a weight class higher.
“I remember not really scoring many takedowns, if any, on him the first couple months of the season,” recalled Azevedo, who now serves as the head wrestling coach at Drexel University. “When I wrestled Shawn and the older, more accomplished guys, I didn’t score much. I got beat up quite a bit. I got a lot better without realizing it.”
